Twenty minutes later, he was ready to bang his head against the table in frustration. He’d given up on Google after thirty seconds and used Pipl, a search engine that trawled through parts of the web unavailable to standard searches, and one that he’d previously found terrifyingly good at attaching people’s names to their addresses. But the flood of possible hits was still over whelming.

‘You get anything?’ he asked Ant.

‘Depends on what you find interesting. Would you be enthralled by the knowledge that there are twenty thousand, six hundred and eighty-six J. Browns listed in the Australian telephone directory, none of whom seem to live anywhere near this PO address?’

Caleb scrubbed his face. He might have to get Sammi to do a little more hacking – they wouldn’t be able to trace any of these names through his usual methods. It was hard to imagine a blander list outside of an all-white organisation. Which was an interesting idea.

‘Maybe they’re some kind of Anglo group,’ he said.

Ant’s eyes went to something behind him. ‘What, like a tweed shopping network?’

‘More along the lines of swastikas.’

‘Oh, right.’ Ant frowned, his eyes darting across the room again. ‘Yeah, they are pretty white bread.’

Caleb turned to see what was happening. Nothing was out of place, but their fellow drinkers were glancing towards the windows.

‘What’s going on?’ he asked.

‘Bit of shouting outside. Think someone broke a bottle. Or a couple of bottles.’ Ant pushed back his chair. ‘Let’s go. I need to express my emotional needs to my woman with some hot and dirty sex.’ He chose the most graphic signs possible, ones easily readable by a non-signing ten-year-old.

The high school teachers applauded and raised their glasses in salute. Ant bowed.
